EXIF mistakes people make before posting photos

Most exposure comes from a handful of recurring assumptions.

  • Assuming every platform strips metadata. Your own website, a WordPress upload, or a marketplace listing may serve the file exactly as provided.
  • Stripping metadata before posting, then sharing the untouched original through a cloud link anyway.
  • Treating DateTime as the capture time. It's the last-save time; DateTimeOriginal is when the shutter fired, and confusing them breaks timelines.
  • Forgetting that edited exports often inherit the original's tags, GPS included, depending on the editor's settings.
  • Never once checking what their own phone writes, so every earlier upload carries unknown baggage.
