That small '7 min read' label at the top of a blog post does more work than it appears to. It sets expectations, filters skimmers from committed readers, and quietly influences whether anyone starts the article at all. Why publishers print reading time on everything

Medium popularized the reading time label in the early 2010s, and it spread because it answers the question every visitor silently asks before committing: how much of my day is this? For writers and editors, the estimate serves a second purpose internally. A newsletter aiming at five minutes, a landing page that should stay under two, a tutorial that legitimately needs fifteen: reading time turns editorial length debates into checkable numbers before anything ships.

The core is one line of arithmetic: word count divided by reading speed in words per minute. Adult silent reading of general material runs around 200 to 250 wpm, which is why 200 is the most common default. Divide, round up to whole minutes, print the result.

Implementations differ at the edges. Medium uses roughly 265 wpm and adds 12 seconds for each image in the post. Some calculators round to the nearest minute instead of always up, and better ones show seconds for very short text rather than inflating everything to '1 min read'. The differences are cosmetic; the division is universal, and it's the reading speed assumption, not the formula, that decides whether the label is honest for your audience.

A worked reading time calculation, start to finish

Take an article of 1,842 words. At the default 200 wpm: 1,842 divided by 200 gives 9.21 minutes, which rounds up to a 10 min read. At a brisker 250 wpm the same piece gives 7.37, printed as 8 min. Same article, two defensible labels, which is why you should know your calculator's assumed speed.

Short text shows the second edge case. A 150 word product update at 200 wpm computes to 0.75 minutes, and a good calculator prints 45s rather than rounding up to a minute. For spoken scripts the same math holds with a slower rate: a 2,100 word conference talk at 140 wpm is exactly 15 minutes, which is how speakers discover they've written five minutes too much before rehearsal does.

A well-known Medium analysis found engagement peaking at posts of around seven minutes, roughly 1,600 words at their rate. That number gets repeated as gospel, but the better reading is directional: mid-length posts earned more total reading time than either quick notes or marathons, on that platform, for that audience.

The ideal blog post length for your site depends on the queries you serve. Answer-a-question posts do their job in 600 to 900 words, a 3 to 5 minute label. Comprehensive guides earn 2,000 plus words and wear a 10 minute badge proudly. The useful discipline is deciding the target reading time first, then checking the draft against it, rather than writing until exhausted and accepting whatever the calculator reports.

The formula is simple enough that errors come from inputs, not math:

  • Counting code blocks at prose speed. Developers read code far slower than sentences, so technical tutorials run much longer than their label claims.
  • Ignoring images and embeds. Screenshots, charts, and tweets all consume attention the word count never sees; Medium's 12 seconds per image is a reasonable patch.
  • Using silent-reading speed for read-aloud scripts. Narration runs 130 to 150 wpm, so a 200 wpm estimate undershoots a voiceover by a third.
  • Applying one speed to every audience. Second-language readers and dense academic material both run well below 200 wpm, and a general-audience default misleads both.
