How X Crops Timeline Images and How to Outsmart It

On X, the first impression of your image is a crop you didn't choose. The timeline shows a preview trimmed to fit its layout, and how x crops timeline images decides whether a chart stays legible, a face stays centered, or a punchline gets cut mid frame. How x crops timeline images, mechanically

A height budget, centered.

Single images in the feed render at the timeline's width with a limited height budget. Images near 16:9 display essentially whole; taller ones get trimmed vertically toward the center, and extreme shapes in either direction lose the most. The preview generally favors the middle of the frame, with X's saliency detection occasionally shifting toward faces.

Practical translation: compositions with the subject near dead center survive every context, and 1600x900, the Post preset in the Twitter/X Image Resizer, is the shape the timeline was effectively built around.

Quote posts shrink everything again, and video posters follow separate rules, so the safest mental model is pessimistic: assume the feed shows a horizontal band from the middle of whatever you upload, and put everything that must be read inside that band.

One X image, one crop, computed

3:2 becomes 16:9.

Input: a 3000x2000 photo, ratio 3:2, exported through the 1600x900 preset in Cover mode. The 16:9 target is wider than 3:2, so the full width stays and the height gets cropped to 1688 pixels, shaving about 156 from top and bottom, before the scale down. Output: 1600x900, subject intact provided it sat anywhere near the middle.

Run the same photo through Contain instead and nothing is trimmed; the 3:2 frame floats on white inside the 16:9 canvas. For photography Cover looks better; for charts Contain protects the axes.

Notice also what Cover did not do: it never stretched anything. Aspect ratio distortion is the one error no preset here will make for you, since both modes preserve the source proportions and differ only in what they sacrifice, edges or empty space.

Multi image layouts and their hidden tiles

The grid decides, not you.

Multi image layouts impose their own tiles regardless of what you upload: two images sit side by side as tall columns, three get one tall left tile with two stacked on the right, and four form a grid of short wide rectangles. Each tile crops your image toward its center.

The takeaway isn't memorizing tile math. It's that four mismatched shapes in one post produce four unpredictable crops, while images resized to a consistent ratio keep the collage looking deliberate.

Order matters as much as shape: the first image drives the arrangement and claims the largest tile in the three image layout, so lead with the strongest visual and let the supporting shots fill the smaller slots.

Header vs post sizes on X

Two wide rectangles, different rules.

The header vs post sizes distinction trips people up because both are wide. The header runs 1500x500, a 3:1 strip that crops differently per device and has your profile photo overlapping its lower left corner. Post images live near 16:9 and render inside the feed column instead.

Reusing a post graphic as a header usually fails; the 3:1 crop beheads it. Design the header as its own asset with the left portion kept clear, and let the resizer's Header preset enforce the strip.

The avatar overlap claims roughly the bottom left sixth of the header on most screens, so a wordmark placed there disappears behind your own face. The safe home for header text is the vertical center, right of that zone.

X image mistakes that waste good content

Five ways to lose the tap.

The gap between an image that stops the scroll and one that doesn't is usually mechanical, not creative.

  • Posting a full length vertical infographic and expecting the feed to show more than its midsection
  • Letting Cover mode crop the axis labels off a chart instead of switching to Contain
  • Uploading four images in four different shapes and getting four random crops in the grid
  • Placing the key line of a meme at the very top or bottom of the frame, where trims land first
  • Ignoring the 1200x630 card size, so shared links show a mangled thumbnail while native posts look fine
