ASCII Table

The ascii table on this page lists all 128 characters of the original 7-bit standard, each with its decimal, hex, octal, and binary value plus a plain-English description. Control characters get their proper names, so code 7 reads BEL, Bell instead of an unexplained dot. It's the fastest ascii code lookup when you're debugging a parser that chokes on byte 13, or confirming that 0x41 really is uppercase A. Search accepts decimal numbers, hex values, or the character itself, and both the Dec and Hex columns copy with one click. And if you want an ascii chart printable enough to pin beside your monitor, printing this page from the browser does the job.

How to use

01

Search for a character or code

Type 65, 0x41, or simply the letter A into the search box. Matching also runs over descriptions, so searching tab surfaces HT, Horizontal tab, sitting at code 9.

02

Read across the row

Each entry shows Dec, Hex, Oct, Binary, the character itself, and a description. Control codes 0 through 31 display a dot placeholder along with their official abbreviation spelled out.

03

Copy the value you came for

Use the copy buttons on the decimal and hex columns when you need byte values for test fixtures, escape sequences, or a quick sanity check during a code review.

Why ASCII Table

Common questions

Why is A 65 but a 97 in the ascii table?
The designers placed the lowercase alphabet exactly 32 positions after the uppercase one, so the two cases differ by a single bit, bit six. That makes case conversion a one-bit operation: 65 is binary 1000001, 97 is 1100001. Every programming language inherits this layout.
What ascii character codes count as control characters?
Codes 0 through 31, plus 127 (DEL), are control characters rather than printable symbols. These ascii character codes were commands for teletype hardware, and a few remain everywhere: 9 is tab, 10 is line feed, 13 is carriage return, 27 is escape.
Does the table cover extended ASCII from 128 to 255?
No, deliberately. The standard only defines 0 through 127, and the 128 to 255 range means different things in different legacy code pages like Latin-1 and Windows-1252. There's no single correct extended table, so this page sticks to the part that's universal.
How do I find the binary form of a character here?
Search for the character or its decimal code, then read the Binary column, which shows all seven bits zero-padded. For uppercase G, for instance, you'd search G and read 1000111 next to decimal 71.
What's the difference between CR and LF?
CR, carriage return, is code 13, and LF, line feed, is code 10. Unix systems end lines with LF alone, while Windows uses the CRLF pair, which is why files hop between the two and diffs light up on every line.
Is space a printable character or a control code?
It sits right on the boundary at code 32, the first position after the control block, and the table lists it explicitly as Space. Most definitions treat it as printable even though it leaves no visible mark.
Can I look up a character by its hex value?
Yes. The search field matches the Hex column, so entering 0x41 jumps straight to A. That's useful when you're staring at a hex dump and want to translate bytes back into readable text without doing the math.
