What's actually stored inside a WiFi QR code?
A plain text string in the WIFI: format, for example WIFI:T:WPA;S:HomeNet;P:hunter2;;. The T field carries the encryption type, S the network name, and P the password. Your phone parses those fields and offers to join.
Which encryption option should my WiFi QR code use?
WPA / WPA2, unless your router predates 2006. WPA3 personal networks generally join fine from a code marked T:WPA, since phones negotiate the strongest protocol the router offers. WEP exists here purely for old hardware that can't do better.
Do guests need an app to scan the WiFi QR code?
No. iPhones have handled these natively since iOS 11, and Android has since version 10, with earlier versions covered through Google Lens. Guests point the standard camera at the code and tap the join banner.

Those characters double as field separators in the WIFI string format, so some scanners misread passwords containing them. Test the code with your own phone first; if it fails, the reliable fix is rotating to a password without those characters.
Does my WiFi QR code break when I change the password?
Yes, instantly. The credentials are frozen into the image at generation time, so a password change means generating and printing a fresh code. Anywhere you posted the old one needs swapping too.
