Does the character counter include spaces and punctuation?
Yes, the main figure is built to count characters with spaces, punctuation, and line breaks all included, because that's what most platform limits measure. If you need the stripped version, the No spaces box gives you that number side by side.
Which platform character limits does the tool track?
Five bars are built in: Twitter / X at 280 characters, meta description at 160, meta title at 60, SMS at 160, and Bluesky at 300. All five update at once, so one draft can be checked against every target simultaneously.
Is 160 characters a hard limit for meta descriptions?
Not exactly. Google truncates descriptions by pixel width, not a fixed character count, but around 155 to 160 characters is where cutoffs typically happen on desktop. Treating 160 as your ceiling keeps you safe on most result pages.
Can the character count act as a letter counter for one word?
Sure. Paste or type the word and read the No spaces figure, which equals the letter count when there's no punctuation involved. It's handy for crossword answers, form fields with tight limits, and checking name lengths.
Why did one of the character limit bars turn red?
Red means your text has passed that platform's limit. The count next to the bar turns red and bold too, showing exactly how far over you are, so you know how many characters to cut.
How are emoji handled in the character count?
The tool measures UTF-16 code units, which is how JavaScript sees strings, so many emoji register as 2 or more characters. Platforms count differently: Twitter counts most emoji as 2, while SMS switches to a smaller 70 character budget once any emoji appears.
What does the No newlines character total tell me?
It's your count with line breaks removed but spaces kept. Some single-line inputs, like ad headline fields, silently drop line breaks on paste, so this number predicts what those fields will actually receive.
