Common questions
Why is the IP shown here different from my router's 192.168 address?
Your router address is private, used only inside your home network. This page shows your public address, the one your ISP assigns to your whole connection and the one remote servers actually see. Every device behind your router shares that public address.
Is the IP on this page my IPv4 or my IPv6 address?
Whichever protocol your connection used to reach the server. If you searched whats my ipv4 but see a long address with colons, your network preferred IPv6 for this request. Dotted numbers like 203.0.113.88 mean the request traveled over IPv4.
Does this page log or store my IP address?
No. The address is read from the incoming request, displayed to you, and that's the end of it. Nothing is written to a database and there's no tracking attached to the readout.
Why does my IP geolocation show the wrong city?
Geolocation databases map addresses to ISP infrastructure, not to your house. If your provider routes traffic through a hub two hundred kilometers away, that's the city lookups will report. It's normal and not something you can change.
Can my public IP change without me doing anything?
Yes, most home connections use dynamic assignment. A router reboot, a DHCP lease expiring, or ISP maintenance can hand you a new address overnight, which is why allowlist entries based on home IPs eventually break.
How do I verify my VPN is actually hiding my IP?
Load this page with the VPN off and note the address, then reconnect the VPN and refresh. You should see a completely different address belonging to the VPN provider. If the readout doesn't change, the tunnel isn't carrying your web traffic.
