Common questions
How does the word frequency counter treat capitalization and punctuation?
Everything is lowercased first, so The and the merge into one entry. Punctuation is stripped and replaced with spaces, which means contractions split apart: don't becomes don, with the lone t dropped by the minimum length filter. Keep that in mind when reading counts for contracted words.
What counts as a stopword in the frequency list?
The built-in list covers roughly 60 high-frequency English words: articles, pronouns, auxiliaries, and question words like what and where. With the filter checked, these never appear in the ranking. Uncheck it and they flood back in, usually claiming the top spots.
Can the frequency tool work as a most used words counter for a book chapter?
Yes. Paste the whole chapter and the top 50 most used words appear ranked with counts. The analysis runs in your browser, so even long chapters process quickly and nothing gets uploaded.
Is the frequency percentage based on all my text or just filtered words?
It's calculated against the filtered total, not everything you pasted. Toggle the stopword filter or change the minimum length and the percentages shift, because the denominator changed. Compare runs only when the filter settings match.
Why doesn't a word I know I used appear in the frequency table?
Three likely reasons: the table caps at the top 50 entries, the word is shorter than the Min length setting, or it's on the stopword list. Lower the minimum length or untick the filter and check again.
How large a document can the word frequency analysis handle?
Comfortably tens of thousands of words, since counting happens in browser memory with no server round trip. The display stays manageable regardless of size because only the 50 most frequent entries render.
What frequency percentage means a word is overused?
There's no universal threshold, but for a content word, anything above 1.5 to 2 percent of a long text starts to feel repetitive to readers. Judge it against the word's importance: a product name can run high, a filler adjective shouldn't.
