Common questions

What makes the AI image upscaler different from just resizing?
Plain resizing interpolates between existing pixels, which produces soft, smeared enlargements. To genuinely increase image resolution, the ESRGAN model predicts plausible texture and edges learned from huge amounts of training data. The difference is most visible at 4x, where interpolation alone falls apart.
Does upscaling actually enhance image quality?
It sharpens edges and adds believable texture, so yes for most photos. But when you enhance image quality ai models can only build on what's there: heavy JPEG artifacts, motion blur, or strong noise get enlarged along with everything else. A clean small image upscales far better than a damaged big one.
What happens if my device can't run the AI upscaler?
The tool detects when WebGL or GPU memory isn't up to the job and automatically falls back to a high-quality canvas enhancer that step-doubles the image with smoothing, then applies a sharpening pass. You still get a clean enlargement, just without the learned detail.
Is there a size limit when I upscale image online here?
Uploads are capped at 5 MB per file and output is capped at 4096 pixels on the longest side. That means 2x accepts inputs up to 2048 pixels and 4x up to 1024 pixels on the longest edge; larger sources get scaled to fit first so the result never blows past the ceiling.
Why does the first AI upscale take longer than later ones?
The ESRGAN weights and the TensorFlow.js runtime download from a CDN on first use. After that they're cached by your browser, so subsequent upscales go straight to processing. Nothing about your image is sent anywhere at any point.
Should I choose 2x or 4x upscaling?
Use 2x when the source is already decent and you want speed; it also accepts larger inputs. Use 4x for genuinely tiny sources like thumbnails and old low-res exports. If 4x output looks waxy or artificial on faces, drop back to 2x for a more natural balance.
Will the upscaler process a batch of images at once?
Yes. Drop multiple files and the tool switches to bulk mode automatically, processing each at your chosen factor and packaging everything into upscaled-images.zip. Every file still runs locally in your browser, one after another.
