Common questions
How much smaller does compression actually make a PDF?
Typically 5 to 30 percent, depending on how the source was written. PDFs exported from Word or a design tool often carry redundant objects that object stream compression folds away. A file that was already optimized may only drop a few percent.
Why did compressing my scanned PDF barely change the size?
A scan is essentially a stack of photographs, and this tool doesn't recompress raster images in the browser. The structural cleanup still runs, but pictures dominate the total. Convert the pages with PDF to JPG, squeeze them in Image Compressor, then rebuild with JPG to PDF for a much bigger cut.
Is it safe to compress a PDF that contains sensitive documents?
Yes. The file is processed entirely in your browser with the pdf-lib library and never touches a server. Close the tab and nothing remains anywhere but your own machine.
Can I compress pdf online free here, with no account or watermark?
There's no sign up, no watermark, and no page limit beyond the 100 MB upload cap. The compression is lossless, so the output is your same document, just written more efficiently.
Will compressing a PDF reduce its visual quality?
No. Object stream compression is lossless: text, fonts, vector graphics, and images look identical afterward. That's also why the savings are moderate, since nothing gets downsampled or re-encoded.
What's the fastest way to shrink pdf files that are mostly text?
Run them through this tool once. Text-heavy files respond best to structural compression because their bulk is object overhead rather than imagery. If the result still misses a limit, break the document up with Split PDF and send it in parts.
Does Compress PDF work on password protected files?
It will attempt to load encrypted files, but re-saving them can fail or produce a broken document. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, compress the result, then add the lock back with Protect PDF if you need it.
