Crop PDF

Book scans arrive with a thick gray border on every side, and on a six inch e-reader that border shrinks the actual text to squint size. This crop pdf tool cuts the border away. Upload the file, type a margin in points into the Margin to trim field, 72 points equals one inch, and a dashed rectangle redraws on every thumbnail to show exactly where the new page edge falls. One value trims all four sides of every page, which is just what's needed to trim pdf margins off a uniform scan. Click Crop & download and the result saves with -cropped in the filename, processed entirely on your own machine.

How to use

01

Upload the scanned PDF

Drop your file in the upload zone. Every page appears in the preview grid, so you can judge how much dead border the scanner wrapped around the content.

02

Dial in the margin

Enter a value from 0 to 200 in the Margin to trim (points) field. The dashed rectangle redraws live on each thumbnail as you adjust the number.

03

Crop and download

Press Crop & download. The tool sets a matching crop box on every page and hands back yourfile-cropped.pdf, ready to sideload onto your reading device.

Why Crop PDF

Common questions

How many points equal the margin I want to crop?
Multiply inches by 72: a half inch border is 36 points, a full inch is 72. Working in centimeters, multiply by about 28.35. Most scanner borders fall somewhere between 20 and 40 points.
Is crop pdf free to use for large scanned files?
Yes, you can crop pdf pages online here at no cost. Yes, free with no account, no watermark, and a 100 MB ceiling per file that comfortably covers most scanned books. Since your machine does the work, a big file just takes a moment longer to render its thumbnails.
Does cropping remove the content outside the box?
No, it hides it. The tool sets each page's crop box, which tells viewers what region to display, while everything outside remains stored in the file. Anyone with an editor can reset the box and see the full page, so never use cropping to conceal sensitive information.
Why is my file the same size after a crop?
Because no data was deleted, only the visible region changed. The full scanned image of each page is still embedded beneath the crop box. If size is the problem, run the result through the Compress PDF tool afterward.
Can every page get a different crop margin?
No, one margin applies to all four sides of every page in the document. That suits uniform scans well but not layouts where content drifts around. For those, pick a margin conservative enough for the worst page.
What unit does the crop margin field use?
PDF points, the format's native unit, where 72 points make an inch. The field accepts whole numbers from 0 to 200. Typing 0.5 hoping for half an inch won't work; enter 36 instead.
Will a cropped PDF display correctly on an e-reader?
Almost always, since Kindle, Kobo, and the major reading apps respect the crop box when fitting a page to the screen. The payoff is real: less border means the device scales the text block larger. A quick check on your own device before cropping a 400 page book is still wise.
